PAST EVENT: ESCO Europe 2010

Lisbon, Portugal: 3-4 November

As a gold sponsor of ESCO Europe 2010, Self Energy had a very visible presence at the event, which took place this year in Lisbon.

The event was extremely well attended and saw the highest number of delegates to date at an ESCO Europe event.  More than 200 of Europe's leading ESCOs, utilities, public bodies, energy agencies and financial companies, gathered to explore new ESCO solutions to deliver increased energy efficiency and combat the pressures of climate change.

As part of a comprehensive speaker programme, delegates heard from Miguel Matias, CEO of Self Energy Group, and Paul Lewis, Managing Director, Self Energy UK, about how Self Energy has developed in ESCO markets in the UK and elsewhere in the world. The UK sector was discussed in a number of the sessions, showing the growing interest in the UK market and the opportunities it represents.

In addition to the conference sessions, Self Energy hosted a pre-conference Welcome Reception and also a site visit to the MARL Energie project. More than twenty of the delegates took the opportunity to get a first-hand look at MARL Energie - one of the world’s largest rooftop solar installations, meeting local energy demands and feeding power back into the grid.

PAST EVENT: CRC Energy Efficiency Summit

Kensington, London, UK: 6-7 July 2010

The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC) is the UK’s first mandatory energy savings and carbon trading scheme targeting emissions from public and private sector groups.

CRC participants that fail to reduce their energy consumption and carbon emissions are expected to face significant costs associated with the purchase of carbon allowances and potential financial penalties. They also risk serious reputational damage with the publication of the scheme’s annual league table comparing the carbon management performances of all participants.

Now in its fourth year, the CRC Energy Efficiency Summit has provided an important platform for stakeholders and policymakers to meet and discuss the development of this scheme.

Key points covered at the summit:

  • How to develop carbon and energy savings strategies to boost league table performance
  • The most cost-effective energy efficiency and carbon reduction measures
  • How to estimate costs associated with compliance and allowance purchases
  • The mechanics of carbon trading and how to minimise financial risk

The CRC Energy Efficiency Summit featured a keynote address from Tim Yeo, MP. Mr Yeo has been Member of Parliament for South Suffolk since 1983 and Chairman of the Environmental Audit Select Committee since 2005. Paul Lewis, Managing Director, Self Energy was also on the panel.

PAST EVENT: Energy in the City - Securing the Future

23rd - 24th June 2010, London South Bank University

According to United Nations' research, half of the worldwide population now lives in cities.  Cities are hugely important to economic development and wealth creation, which in turn makes them very large consumers of energy. This creates significant challenges for ensuring secure supplies and adequate infrastructures to meet these growing and changing needs. However, cities also offer some very real benefits for efficient generation and delivery of energy services.

This conference explored the opportunities for local energy generation and community based delivery systems including the best new technologies, advances in network design, business models and the role of regulation and policy that can achieve truly low carbon cities of the future.

Paul Lewis, Managing Director of Self Energy, spoke at the conference, and Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, officially opened the University's new Centre for Efficient and Renewable Energy in Buildings (CEREB).

PAST EVENT: CIBSE CHP Group Seminar: Barriers, Solutions & Implementation

28th June 2010, CIBSE, 222 Balham High Road, London, SW12 9BS

Paul Lewis, Managing Director of Self Energy UK spoke at the CIBSE CHP Group Seminar on Monday 28th June 2010.  The seminar contained a series of industry case studies focusing on the solutions required for reducing running costs and carbon emissions in buildings through CHP.  This tried and tested technology can help to deal with increasing energy prices, energy certification, CRC and building regulations.

Paul Lewis joined a raft of high-profile speakers who discussed the issues surrounding the CHP industry:

  • What are the barriers to CHP projects currently going ahead?
  • What are the best CHP solutions and in what buildings?
  • How do we get from feasibility to implementation?
  • Can financial barriers be addressed through new business models?
  • Does current regulation help or hinder CHP?

The event was aimed at engineers, contractors, planners and developers working in new build and retrofit sectors as well as architects and designers.
